The Senseless Hand of Fate
Everything was set up for it to go wrong, but it went right.
My sister, desperate at fourteen years old and weighing only about 45 kg, was trying to pull my nine-year-old brother by the wrists as he hung outside the window of their first-floor apartment in building D, in Brasília, Plano Piloto, in that block reserved for the families of Brazilian Army soldiers. She was alone at home with my brother, and once again trying to escape through the bedroom window, when my sister noticed those two little hands gripping the windowsill, ready to project themselves under the building.
She saved him from falling, but not from marijuana, from skipping school every day, my mother working as a monitor at a daycare center run by the Memorial Baptist Church—yes, we are Baptists, originally from Rio de Janeiro, we came to Brasília as pioneers, joining the construction workers, without paved roads, without leisure activities, without decent hospitals, just good schools, excellent ones in fact, but nothing for a boy to do.
There, the password to an infamous childhood and adolescence remained, that open-air madhouse called the Cerrado, six months of drought without a drop of rain, followed by six months of intermittent rain day and night, nosebleeds during the dry season, peeling skin—such was the unknown and poorly paid adventure of building a city and a civilization in just five years, a world record hardly surpassed even by the Chinese.
Prayers, a disciplined life of study, dedication to the church, daily prayers, sacrificial walks, climbing the steps of the Penha Cathedral in Rio de Janeiro, performing penances on pilgrimages to Campostela, Santiago de Compostela, Nossa Senhora d'Aparecida, Pedra Negra in Mecca, the Walls of Jerusalem, baptism in the Jordan River, tithes, vows to God—all are useless, much less the Pope who needed a surgeon to remove the cancer that God did not want or could not cure, nor could the Pope perform the miracle of healing himself—there is no reward; destiny randomly chooses, according to rules that no priest recognizes, who will be blessed and will be "the one."
This being chosen by destiny did not attend classes, only studied up to the fourth grade of elementary school, and did not attend religious services at the Memorial Baptist Church of Brasília, of which all family members were active participants.
There is no cause related to success, no causality, nothing that self-help books could explain, no formula for success to be reproduced.
Estava almoçando na casa da minha mãe vindo do intervalo do trabalho de programador de computador do Ministério do Interior, para visitar as minhas filhas do primeiro casamento, por que estava desquitado da mãe das meninas, quando ele surgiu sem camisa com seu skate nas mãos, suado reclamando que Renato Russo havia convidado o amigo Geruza para ser baixista na gravação em estúdio da gravadora de discos multinacional EMI ODEON, mas ele não tinha ao dinheiro para viajar, então tinha acabado de fazer o mesmo convite para meu irmão, e dizia que azar porque iria perder aquela chance por que não tinha dinheiro.
Levantei da mesa e fui de carro com ele até a agência da empresa aérea Transbrasil e tirei a passagem somente de ida e dei um cartão de crédito para ele se virar na ida para o Rio de Janeiro e disse que só voltasse para casa com o disco debaixo do braço, gravado na suas banda de Rock Legião Urbana.
